New York City Emergency Management issued a travel advisory on Sunday for Staten Island, NY, due to the potential complications of thunderstorms in the evening, which may result in flooding in vulnerable areas. The advisory cautions that rainfall levels could range from one to three inches, with localized amounts of three to six inches, leading to inundation in low-lying and poorly drained regions.

In light of the thunderstorms in the vicinity, the alert strongly advises against travel due to potentially hazardous conditions, urging residents of New York to stay indoors during severe weather episodes. New York City Emergency Management suggests that drivers allocate additional time for travel and consider utilizing public transportation whenever feasible.

According to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tyler Roys, who spoke with the Staten Island Advance/SILive earlier on Sunday, a storm originating from the Southwest and moving towards the Northeast brought substantial rainfall to Staten Island the previous evening. Roys identified this storm as “the primary concern for potential flooding in the region” for today.

Roys further elaborated, stating, “The storm has been intensifying in eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware, and it is expected to make its way towards the Staten Island area within the next four to six hours.”

In a tweet, the National Weather Service emphasized that a Moderate risk of excessive rainfall, an uncommon occurrence in the region, exists for New York, New Jersey, and parts of Connecticut.

Moreover, on Tuesday, Staten Island is expected to experience hazy skies due to Canadian Wildfires and the arrival of a “cold front.”

If travel is unavoidable, exercise caution and avoid driving or walking through areas where the roadway is submerged in water, as the water depth may pose significant risks.
